Michigan Morels - May 12, 2010 - These were found under two dead elms that were right next to one another. I would estimate that there were about 150-200 morels under these trees. This pic is only a small section of the whole area, so you can imagine what the scene looked like! It was awesome! Biker Dave, and Dave in Commerce, these were found in central Oakland County on May 12. Quite a few of them had significant slug damage and were not harvested. All were pretty dirty from the recent rains splashing dirt on them but overall, they were in pretty good shape. Total yearly count around 600+. - bung23

Mesick Morels, May 8th - May 12th, 2010 - We found some of all colors; black, grey and yellow/white. I think we found mostly yellow/white during our 5 days. Maybe about 40 really nice ones all together the entire time. We had to walk a long ways to find the ones we did find, we definitely had to work for them. Others whom we talked with in the woods told us that they found next to nothing today and a mere 58 for the week and a half that they had been there :o(
My mom almost lost the nice one she found to my husband as you’ll notice in the picture, LOL!! She made us some morel soup with some of our findings, and oh man was it good :o)
Bring on morel season 2011…………….. and ………….Mother Nature, don’t screw it up like you did this year please :o) — Kellie

Michigan Morels - May 5, 2010 - These are the largest, thickest, heaviest morels i’ve ever found- and i’ve found some biggins! i cant believe how early in may that it is but its so late in the morel season. my birthday is next week and thats usually prime time for morels- i took some days off to morel hunt- but i think the majority of the morels i will find next week will be decaying. biker dave, i hunt in the general area that you do and if you’re finding decayed ones, they’re decaying by me too. i did find some decaying ones when i found those monsters. i’m tellin ya, that one by the pop can was as big as a grapefruit- and about as heavy too!
no more complaining about sharing info. i dont care what somebody says- theres soooo much land to scour for morels that everyone has the opportunity to fill their bag. i only have one spot where i’ve never found a stem before, and that spot only gives me about a dozen morels a year! i’ve picked about 500 this year- all in areas where i’ve seen evidence of other hunters (stems).

Wisconsin Morels - May 6, 2010 - Found these in Eau Claire County Yesterday. Have seen and heard of good finds south of here in the last week. First year out and found enough for a meal, stoked. Have seen people find much more than I did in recent days, wouldn’t doubt if there are still more out there. You just gotta get in the thick of it, I found spots that had already been picked but don’t let that get you discouraged. Check for ticks when you get done for sure.

North Carolina - May 2, 2010 - Went out Sunday to our favorite spot north of Asheville and found about 80 – 90 yellows with one or two blacks and one grey. Poplar trees, creek bottoms – same spot we found 61 last week. Tried another spot close by on a hunch and found the biggest morels we’ve ever found in WNC – a couple the size of a soda can. Best day we’ve ever had. Ended up with 154 morels. Dug a few ramps for good measure. - Jeff and Pam

Mesick Mushroom Festival - Mesick, MI - May 7 thru 9, 2010
Filed Under Events, Michigan | 10 Comments | 2,245 views

Spring brings GREAT things like Mothers Day, Steelhead fishing, beautiful flowers and woodland surprises such as tasteful morel mushrooms with of coarse our annual Mesick mushroom festival.
Mesick Michigan is the mushroom capital in the United States. Come enjoy our adventurous fun filled days, for people of all ages. Carnival rides for the thrill seekers, crafts and hobbies or flea market for treasure hunters, ball games for the players. Several contests for mushroom hunters, lucky duck race, horseshoe toss, horse pull. View our antique car show and Grand Parade. Have your blood pressure or sugar tested before tasting lots of good food like BBQ chicken, baked goods, pasties, a fish dinner or taco night and of coarse the usual fair goodies. Then wash it all down at our beer tent. Look for cash at our money hunt, games for the game boys or girls and (not the hand held kind). But you can walk around holding hands with your loved ones, or try our 5 K walk/run. And for all you mud pie makers as kids. Don’t throw mud with your (words) tongue or your hands. Watch the Mug bog racers throw some really wet earth up into the air. It’s safer this way. So start your engines, let the mud fly, as we ride rides and reach for the sky. The sky truly is the limit for quality family- friendly activities, fun, finds, fast thrills and food at our great hometown festival.

Each May, Boyne City MI fills with hundreds of mushroom lovers from around the country who come seeking that elusive delicacy-the marvelous morel. Found in nearby woods and clearings, morels are favored by those who know their ’shrooms.
Boyne City hosts the National Morel Mushroom Festival and the Boyne Valley Lion’s National Morel Mushroom Hunt each year, and for a few short days, everything is all about mushrooms. Restaurants prepare exotic, morel-laden entrees, local songsters sing of the morel (click on the player to the left to listen), secret hunting places (maybe) and recipes (definitely) are shared, and everybody goes on the mushroom hunt. A good year can yield thousands of the mouth-watering treats. But, even when a dry spell or late spring makes morels scarce, morels can be tasted at the ‘Taste of Morels’ and the festival is always fun for everyone.
