Vermont Morels - May 20, 2008

Filed Under Photos, Vermont  | 2,602 views

Here are some photos of morels that were growing in the gardens at my house in Essex Junction, VT. The photos were taken about a week ago. I picked the shrooms this evening (05/27/08) because they were showing signs of starting to brown. The cool temperatures and rain during the last week or so seem to have extended the season. Hope to get out and search the woodlands in hopes of finding more if the weather remains the same.

    hey folks!

I grew up in Montpelier, and 3 years moved to south western Ohio… (don’t ask)

anyway, we’re in morel heaven here- and I find them here by the dozens.

so! I really didn’t know how to cook them at first and we’ve done some experimenting- so I want to share what NOT to do- don’t sautee them in any type of wine, onion- etc. Simply put, they will seriously suck.

    Best recipes we’ve found:
    Simple simple simple.
    1. cut mushroom in half, soak mushrooms in salt water 24 hours. (gets rid of bugs)
    2. dredge in white flower.
    3. heat butter in fry pan, (NOT olive oil, trust me)
    4. let’em fry, somewhat crispy.
    5. add sea salt to taste.

down here we’ve had this very simple recipe, sans gravey, etc. with freshly caught perch fish and corn and a few beers, can’t be beat.

we’d love to hear from VT folks who enjoy mushroom hunting!

    take care,
    dan

You have me searching for my morel recipes. I got one from a lady in Michigan. Morels, cream and white wine. Makes a great gravy to pour over chops, steaks and such. I will keep looking, but you may have to experiment.

You can buy dehydrated ones at Meijer’s if you have one in the area. Or just look up gourmet foods. the Food network has a link you can find them at also. :) keep smiling till next spring … psst they are expensive to buy .
