
Georgia Morels - March 22, 2009 - Found yesterday, fried today in Georgia. Get you some bunnybread, cut off the crusts to drain the morels on. Cut the crustless bread in half for sandwiches. Cut the morels in half, wash very carefully and throw washwater out in the woods, yard or golfcourse. Then dust lightly with plain white flour, shake very carefully, salt and fry in VEGETABLE oil only. No butter or olive oil! When browned lightly, but not tooo lightly, remove and drain on your crusts to save wasting paper towels and trees. Have a few straight up and have the rest wrapped in bunnybread. - Gary

Found many morels in Augusta, GA yesterday!
April 4,2009 3:00 pm found several tiny morels in East Cobb just off Johnson Ferry Rd at an environmental education center. Guess I will dry and keep these for luck.
Note to Brandon: I haven’t found morels much south of Clarke County, but assume they grow further south than here. I would look in the hardwoods only along creeks or rivers. Depending on how far south you are the season may be approaching the end. Expecting rain in the next few days and hoping the big ones pop up. I grew up in Illinois and hunted morels since I could walk. Was surprised to find them growing on my property in Georgia when I first moved here 35 years ago. There are several other excellent species to eat in Georgia; oysters, chanterelles, Caesars, boletes and parasols to name a few. I wouldn’t expect to find morels south of Macon, but I didn’t expect to find them here either. Get a good book and find some of the other varieties while in south Georgia. Hope you get back to Indiana for one good hunt.
The bunny bread is a good idea. I live in northern Indiana and have hunted mushrooms most of my life, Larry Lonik (god rest his soul) said that mushrooms grow in every state. I believe that, unfortunately I am working in southern Georgia and don’t know what areas or trees to look for. I know how precious mushroom spots are and don’t expect you to reveal any secrets but nobody down here has a clue what a morel is let alone know where you might find one. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
cut in half-wash well-damp dry. bread with flour/salt/pepper mix. fry in real butter. fry lightly both sides if for freezing. fry till light brown both sides, serve with a nice thick steak. they are a real treat in the middle of dec, & jan. it is only noon i’m hungry. gene:
