Mesick Michigan Morels - May 29, 2009 - Gord & I had to go back and face the music with our camper. We had left it behind with the “tent worms” last weekend. (Yeah, that was a mistake!!!)

So Friday, the 29th we went back to Mesick.

We went up Friday early in the morning. But as soon as we got there we realized the worms move much slower when it’s chilly. So…….we hit the spots, ended up with a nice bag full of big ole yellers :-) No one was out there, or crazy enough to go out there like us, LOL, but after stalling for a few hours, we went to see the damage. OMG, it was not good. He swept and swept, and we finally got the heck out of there. We gave it one more quick sweep once we got out of the woods, and immediately hit the car wash in Cadillac to see how many more we could get rid of…….. Not too many. Had to hit another car wash once we got back to Kalamazoo, had the camper opened up right in the bay, the maintenance guys were kind of thinking all the worms were cool on the truck…….. til they saw the camper too, and how many worms we were leaving there, they thanked us sarcastically. Anyways, here’s pics of our finds. — Kellie Greene

We were in Mesick last year during worm fest also. I was wondering if you had been there this year yet? We are trying to figure out if the worms are going to be that bad again or not. I’ve been going for 12 years and have never seen it like that. Those white nest things were everywhere you looked. If you’ve been up there this year, could you please email me and let me know what the worm situation is like this year. Thank you. Sonya

Here in Montana, July is shroom picking time on the mountains that burned the previous year. It can be very steep and dangerous but the morels look like they are sticking up out of pure dirt with no vegetation. On one mountain near the Idaho border I left with 4 50 lb. horse feed bags filled with morels and there were still many left. but I had a 4 hour ride out on some very narrow, high trails. Also starting to get commercial pickers, Vietnamese from Seattle. Some confrontations.Weren’t many fires in this area last year, but just save the papers during the fires and they have detailed maps of the fire areas. There is a lot of country here but if you use the available resources you occasionally hit the “Mother Lode”
