Wisconsin Morels - May 1, 2010 - Mushroom hunting wasn’t too bad. Lots of woods and hours not to mention all the ticks, even after the bug spray. - CM

We’re rookies, but happen to come across Morels this year in our pasture land that has not been used for several years. How long does the typical harvest season last and is it always around the same time of year (beginning of May)? Hoping to find more and continue to harvest in the future.

I was on my daily walk with Rosie, our dog. When, upon me I ran across a batch of, what I thought, were Morels. I’ve researched the find and am convinced with what we have. Dinner tomorrrow night !!!! Any good home receipes you want to share???

Okay everyone. Enough about the Dirt. These were picked by a kid, and he was told not to do this way, but she got excited. This was found way after the fact since she was in a different area than me. So it was too late. SO ENOUGH ABOUT THE DIRT!!!!!

I am wondering if we will still get a good harvest. I have found one here and there, but nothing like past years. Also, I get saddened every time I see photos of morels with dirt at the bottom. CUT them!!! OK, I don’t get sad, I get mad! I am hoping this week will be the week.

Not nearly as many posts as last year. HOw come? I have to travel 1 1/2 hours to get to my spot so I’d like to know what’s goin’ on. My spot is near Richland Center and I plan on goin’ this weekend. Anybody from that area tell me if there are any left?

    Thanks,

    Carl

At least you know there won’t be any there next year since you destroyed the bed. It is also tough to get all that dirt out. Rookies!!!!!

I found a dozen or so this weekend, but the actual tip of the mushroom seems to be much smaller on average than those in the above picture. Do you think that they might not be morels? Is there any other type of mushroom in WI that might look like a morel?

Don’t pull the morels!!! Use a knife or something to clip/cut them off!!

I don’t think that pulling mushrooms is a good practice. Use scissors or a thumb nail to cut the stem, never disturb mycelium! If you put the stem “butts” between wet cardboard and bury them in a suitable habitat, you may be able to get the mycelium to run. Waste not, want not!
