Cool!! Great to hear there's at least one person in the area. Lol
Well I can't disclose that type of info. Lol. I can tell you they do grow all over the area. All of my finds are associated with
White oaks
Not only do I hunt wild mushrooms, I know organic edible mushroom farmer in Louisiana... there are only two total for the whole state. I also know the president of the mycological research foundation for the southern states. So yes mushroom people are here... & do exisit. Just not very many.

NOLA/Northshore area here. Pearl River protected zone had TONS of chantys last Summer/early Fall...as in too many for three people. City Park has them too but everyone in NOLA usually snatches them up fast. Anyone know about oysters (and morels too... but seems everyone has already asked). Pretty new to the mushroom game but def interested in learning more.

Hey Daniel. I am just finding this site and thread, a year late. Lol. I am in SWLA and love wild mushrooms. I have been harvesting a few every other day in my yard, boullette, I believe. Very yummy. I think I brought them when I bought some hay bales to garden in. I haven't seen any morels here yet, but quite a few others that are edible. My name is Michael (not Michelle, yes, I'm a lady). It would be great to get to know some other enthusiasts. I have been studying and have decided that this summer I am putting a second shed in to grow my own oysters and shitakes. The chefs at two of our local restaurants have said that if I do, they will buy from me. I've been so excited I can hardly wait to get started. Anyway, just didn't want you to think you were all alone in the hunt and that its nice to know I have kindred spirits close.

What part of SW Louisiana? I used to live in Merryville. My husband has kin folk in Lake Charles, Ragley, Singer, Sulphur, & Moss Bluff. We used to own a race horse training facility in Toomey. I found chanterelles for the first time in La ( found them before in Arkansas) at my aunts & uncles in Ragley last year. Haven’t found any morels there though. Good luck with your oyster & shitake business!

Greensong, I’ve found some really interesting species in the past and was wondering who and where would I be able to share that with in the future?
I actually mailed spores to someone in PA last year and started a national IDing session lol. I believe it was someone in CA who nailed it down to species. I’m not a very scientific guy but would love to learn more about taxonomy and so on

Hi,
Im so glad I found this forum! I’m a complete newbie and have no clue where to start. I wanted to start foraging so my daughters (ages 16,11,& 2) could have something to do without electronics. We live in Slidell Louisiana. Any tips, hints, tricks, or books would be greatly appreciate!
Thanks so much,
Faith

I started off by choosing a few edibles that are very easily identifiable. Research as much as you can about potentially toxic look alikes. The web is a great source Many mushroom pages to choose from. Books...... also many to choose from. Be sure to try and purchase books that are specific to the south. There are thousands of different species and many are particular to certain regions.
I also belong to a community where we share our finds and help each other ID mushrooms. Check us out ...

I’ve only been studying and harvesting edibles for the past 5 years and have yet to find (grifola) hens. On the other hand, plenty of Laetiporus(chickens) to be found. As most mushrooms, you have to be at the right place at the right time. All my finds were associated with either Live Oak or White oaks
Usually they start showing themselves in September and fruit through December-January depending on temps.
Another species to look out for during winter months are Hericium (lions mane). They prefer hardwood as a host. My finds were associated with White oak and water oak. Also, there are the famous Honey mushrooms(Armillaria). It took me three years of researching this species before becoming confident enough to harvest for the table. There are a few look alikes that can be deadly poisonous.
I’m sure there are plenty more edibles but I only stick with the ones easily identified, study them and possible look alikes for at least a year before consuming. I add maybe one or two species a year to the list.
Thanks for the hints/help. The only genus I'm somewhat familiar with were the death caps as they're plentiful. I live and hunt close to very swampy areas and not too familiar with what grows here. Will be a while before I'm confident enough to consume my finds. I enjoy just getting out there. I share the area with quite a few cotton mouths!! lol y'all be safe and good hunting.
