Hey everyone!

Welcome to the Wisconsin 2025 Morel Mushroom (and other edible mushrooms) thread.
I’m Liza(Leeza) aka Tattooed Granny (previously avngal on this site…hey OldElm!). I am licensed in WI to identify and sell 17 species of wild edible mushrooms in the state of WI. My certification also taught me the look alikes and deadly species for the area. I have competed in multiple morel hunting championships…even won a few times. I am “morel obsessed” and have already been walking the woods. Please introduce yourselves below and post photos of your finds along with general location and date.

It's definitely not going to be acearly season this year is Wisconsin. The past 2 years Tulips were already coming up in Feb and blooming in March which is way to early. I will be out scouting as soon as I heal from this dang flu and Pneumonia which put me in the scu for 10 days ughhh!! Wish the best to you all 😊😊

 

Yeah, it is at least 5 days behind maybe more but a heat snap can always change that in an instant. I just keep walking my woods lol.

Great news. If they can travel 100 miles a week. I'll be pickiing in 2 weeks. Moisture looking good recently.

 

Inner woods warming up nicely. 50 degree 4" ground temp. Lilacs starting to bud. It's gonna be a great year.

 

Morels are a great bonus to a spring wash in the woods. I’ve been spoiled the last few years, harvesting 15-20 lbs (per year) right next to my wood shed…hardly hunting, but I’ll take em!

Lilacs leafing
Carocus blooming
Tulips blooming
Lawn mowers are out and about
Some moisture
Temperature going up
Trees budding
Morel club shined up
Clothes permithrined up

Some early finds happening. Probably could almost hear them grow!

If you aren't in the woods in a week, you're going to miss out. Go get'em. Enjoy

Ok,ok, I probably deserve a punch in the throat saying adequate moisture. Recent 2 80 degree days and full sun drying things out. Forecasted 5 plus days of more 80 degree days (hope they get that wrong like usual) ain't gonna help the cause. 4" ground temps taken were 55-58 degrees. At least ramps are growing nicely. @Old Elm what says you? Went west, went east, now headed south. Hill country, hopefully some moisture in the shade and valleys.

 

Farmers planting. Jack in the Pulpit and skunk cabbage up 6-12". Very little pheasant back and LBM mushrooms. No golf balls. More moisture seen. Bloodroot blooming. 4" ground temp 52-59 degrees. I've been in some of my prime spots. May have to wait for rain. This moving through the woods at 80 degrees sure wears me down, especially coming out with noddating. Blessing is no skeeters. ITW

 

 

Hit a good tree today, hot out. Never hunted in 80* temps before. They are popping up dehydrated. Gonna be a fast season.

 

Hey old pal! I used to post as avngal back in the day. We need some rain. My littles are drying up. Had good luck in IL a week ago. Fingers crossed for us here in WI.

 

The forest floor is crackling under my boot and my tee shirt gets soaked from the sweat but I did find 4 dozen greys under an ash in a creek bottom if that is of any encouragement.

 

interesting GD, we have never found them under ash trees, glad you did. 👍🏽

 

Down by us in Stoddard I found some today and will be looking gain tomorrow.

 

First time out looking today picked 9 nice ones. Left a bunch of smalls to grow!
Now I have the fever I'm up in Burnett county so now I know I need to head a little south..

 

Well I actually found some and bonus golden oysters. Inner woods ground temperature back down to 50 degrees. Found nothing in the inner woods. Tree canopy almost full blossom. Leaf cover and vegation not letting sun in. The ones I found were east facing, dark soil and guarded but burning and stinging neetle. Picked bout a dozen and left the same amount to back into the earth, too far gone. Woohoo me. Another bonus was a runner deer fawn. Awesome sight. Probably go to some south facing hills next.
