Three days ago we set a record with 80 degrees and today snow down to the valley floor! I'm at 500 ft. and here's my place! Snow Window Building Plant Tree

Well, at least I did get some shroom hunting in before all this mess; with the drought for the last three years, I was starting to get withdrawls! I did find some Blewits and some Boletes (Suillus luteus actually). The first Blewits were some of the most purple I've gotten. Also had some Armillaria mellea in the back yard! I'll be headed back out after the snow melts!

Thanks for sharing that article, I'm so excited! Just moved to Sac from Northwest Indiana, where we found morels in May last year. I haven't gone foraging around here yet, but after these last few sunny days I'm sure shrooms will be poppin'! Any advice? Head into the mountains east, like El Dorado or Tahoe, or west into Napa/Sonoma? I'm assuming I need to get to higher elevations...

Thanks!!
Also, check some of my previous posts for maps of the wildfire area over near Tahoe!

In the mean time, I ran across some "Conifer False Morels" (Gyromitra esculenta) that I'll post photos of to watch out for; they are listed as "Deadly" in the Audobon Field Manual. This is general info for anyone out there that wants more 'shroom info'!

I also came across some cool cup fungus (Helvella acetabulum) that are pretty cool, though not edible. The biggest one is about 1/2 the size of my palm. Happy Shroomin'....

Here's another tip for morel hunting above @4000 ft. elevation: look for "Snow Flowers". When they start popping out of the ground the Morels are usually right behind them! Here is wikipedia's definition of the Snow Flower (Sarcodes saguinea)
"Sarcodes is the monotypic genus of a north-west American flowering springtime plant in the heath family, containing the single species Sarcodes sanguinea, commonly called the snow plant or snow flower. It is a parasitic plant that derives sustenance and nutrients from mycorrhizal fungi that attach to tree roots. "
They are a beautiful almost florescent red and easy to spot! Happy Shroomin'...

Yeah, my best spots are between 3500 and 5000 ft. out here. I've found a few in the Redding outskirts at @ 500 ft. but I sure wish we got the quantities out here that I know you guys get! I consider 5 lbs. a good year and never have gotten over 10! But there's always hope!...

Nothing found outside of Foresthill yesterday. Looks amazing around 4000 ft alt. but not even cup fungi... yet. Maybe in a couple weeks.

WOOHOO!! My daughter and I found a couple dozen YELLOW Morels under an old apple tree near the Sacramento River in Anderson, California. At an elevation of 433 ft it is the lowest I've ever found morels in CA, the earliest ever and the most yellows in one spot! Needless to say, I'm a Happy Camper! And my daughter is here visiting from Sweden and we had success on our first outing so she is pumped as well. I think it may be the first report from CA this year; hopefully we'll start getting more from the Sunshine State soon! Happy Shroomin'...

Well, we only found one a couple days ago along the Sacramento River but it was a nice one! We made an awesome pizza along with ice cold beers and had a great afternoon! We're forecast for temps up to 95 by Wednesday so we'll be moving up higher as the snow melts and checking some hot spots. Happy Shroomin'.....

I guess I spoke too soon! My daughter went back to the spot where we first discovered Morels on 4/14 and she found these!

I'm pretty sure (?) these will be the last we find under 450 ft. elevation since it was 94 today and hotter tomorrow!
But we're keeping a positive attitude and our eyes open! Happy Shroomin'.....

Anyone finding any around Yreka? What elevation?
I haven't heard anything yet; I've got some friends up in Happy Camp to the west of there; I'll touch bases with them and see what's cookin' and get back to you.

Do you happen to know anyone around willow Creek that has had any luck? the temperatures for the next few days look promising, but after that it looks pretty warm. Thanks for posting the burn maps by the way 👍
Your welcome! I don't have any contacts over there at this time; I would think it might be good timing right noe but with the price of gas it's a lot harder to take a 'recon' trip without some kinda info. I'll see if I can find out anything and get back to you if I do. Happy Shroomin'...

For anyone attending the McCloud Mushroom Festival this year or hunting up near Mt. Shasta, I have some info.
For any questions on hunting, mushroom permits, etc. contact either Lauren Yerkes 530-926-4511 or Sarah Silber at the same number. They are the USFS people to talk to for this years 'rules & regs'! Happy Shroomin'.....

Going to look up above Placerville next week in the Caldor Burn. Had pretty good action last year. I'm just not sure if it's been warm enough yet. There is still heaps of snow up 6k and higher.

I'll be driving out to check out the Ammon and Campbell burns this weekend with a couple friends, so I'll post what we find

Found some great new areas, but no luck on the east side of the Ammon burn. I only had a partial day to hunt, but a good friend and professor at CR said she had amazing luck on the south west side of the Campbell burn, so we'll be checking that out this weekend.
