๐Ÿค  This Will Be My 57th Season of Hunting the Same Areas that My Dad first Carried Me into..when I was only 2 yrs old in 1965
I'm Not Studied up on all the New Sience that is Available in Our Age of Online..
I Just "Love the Hunt" and I Still Find Morels Almost every time I go, sometimes a few Sometimes a lot.. it is very Exciting to find a bunch like 50, 100 or 300..
But I believe we will all agree ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ’ฏ
It's the "Love of the Hunt" and just being in the woods is Always Our Heart โค
๐Ÿค  I hope this year as we all find Our way on down the trail together on Here..
That we will make time to take some Pictures of Cool, interesting things we see along the Way,
Maybe like a beautiful sunrise as you begin your hunt in the morning.. then pics of Morels Growing...
and when you find yourself looking face to face with a perfect Example for a ๐ŸŒณ Tree Identification ๐ŸŒณ please take some pictures and share them with All of us...
๐ŸŒฒ and just as well if you find a Tree you are Not Sure of ..share some good pics of it and we can All help to identify what it is.๐ŸŒฒ
๐Ÿ„ Also when Our Morels are done, STAY IN THE WOODS..We will Continue finding Many Other types of Edible Fungi ๐Ÿ„ all Summer and Fall into Winter ....
Ok โค Thank You Everyone ๐Ÿ˜Š
Let's get on down thru the Woods together and check in here often as You Can..
See ya soon

The last one kind of looks like Chaga. And I typed that sentence just before your reply came through Jpuette. I can't wait to see some green in the woods around here again. And I kind of expect Georgia or Mississippi to chime in with finds in about a month or so! Good luck for this season.

I got about 3" where I live in NE Ohio. With Lake Erie, the snowfall amounts around here can vary wildly within a few miles.

Howdy @parrothead ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป seems like in the 1960's we had a severe/ Real / Normal Winter ..every year..
But Man...these last 12 years are so mild.
But I'm down here below I-70 and Below Indianapolis.
It's a big difference once you get south of Indianapolis..
And I don't ever plan to move any further North for this reason
I don't know. Last winter was pretty good rip-snorter around here. Cold as hell, and with one snow so big I had to have the driveway plowed out. No way I was going to shovel it! Of course I'm up in NE Ohio. And it's the same around here. We're fond of saying that Ohio is like two different states, one north of I-70 and one south of I-70.

Spinning from ; Rip Snorter... @shroomsearcher where are you from East Palestine, How are You doing and might it affect your favorite Morel spots?
We're about 20-25 miles North of East Palestine, and the wind and waterflows run away from us. Never saw any smoke in the sky up here. And I have no hunting grounds in that area. We're all good up here, but I do feel sorry for the folks down there. This is far from over.

๐Ÿค  Man.. I tell You, if I wasn't so busy everyday trying to get my fence built and the Treehugger going before season,.. I would be in the woods looking to see what is Popp'n
I'm in the market for a "treehugger" myself since the frame rotted out on my old pickup. Just found a good looking 2011 Ford Ranger at a nearby lot, and will go Monday to check it out.

This will sound obvious, but check the Kentucky page and see if anyone has posted anything about the Mammoth Cave area.

Yes, I did buy the Ranger. 4.0Liter V-6, automatic with available 4WD. Extended cab. Everything I wanted. When I went to test drive it, the guy handed me the keys and told me go start it and check it out while his Brother was on the way with their dealer plates. It started immediately, and I popped the hood and listened to the engine. No ticking, knocking, pinging, water pump noise etc. It runs extremely quietly, and it's a joy to drive. Now all I need is a cap or tonneau cover for it.

LOL I know. But I also know with all the knowledge in this group its great to hear from others here. I know not everything gets posted etc. I just like to trust the people Ive know in here for a LONG time. Lol
I went on the Kentucky page and found a report for some finds in Allen and Larue cos. AllenCo. is directly south of Mammoth Cave on the Tennessee border. Larue Co.is about the same distance slightly northeast of it. So, they have two finds bracketing the area you want to hunt, so it might be worth a shot.

Mushroom hunters are a niche group, most people donโ€™t like the ones sold in grocery stores let alone ones found in the woods that could kill youโ€ฆ Even up north when I hunt around rivers where people are fishing for salmon/trout no one bothers to get morels as wellโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve seen them growing on the fishing trail by the river and watched fishermen walk right past them and worse step on themโ€ฆ Which makes me wonder each season how many billion in the usa alone never get pickedโ€ฆ๐Ÿค”
So true! Also, mushroom eaters seem to occupy another niche. I'm on a golf webforum and on the Food & Drink page someone started a thread titled something like "Why are mushrooms considered food?" I had to get involved in that one, and I guess a bunch of others picked up on it and we beat the non shroomers down!

As for here, I'm beginning to have doubts about any kind of an earlier season. We seem to be deep in the heart of "second winter". It's gotten cold and is predicted to stay that way for awhile. So, it's basically just back to normal.

Checked this out on the map, and Lauderdale Co. Alabama is in far north Alabama on the southern border of Tennessee.

Hamilton County Ohio March 16th 2023 "Cincinnati" View attachment 44882 Hamilton County Ohio March 16th 2023 "Cincinnati"
This is hopeful news, although I have to take it with a grain of salt. Cincinnati lies in that region known locally as "South of I-70". Here in the frozen wasteland of NE Ohio, that means that they are 6 to 8 weeks ahead of us. At least as far as blacks go. And blacks are still on my bucket list. I've never found a single one!

Something I read long ago said, something like, "The first thing you have to do when learning to hunt for black morels, is forget everything you know about yellows!" Reading more in order to pick up more info, I also read that you can find blacks near honey locust trees. Well, I know where a bunch of them are, but I've never checked that area for mushrooms. Any other suggestions about the environment that blacks prefer?

Has Anyone Heard of any Cool Events for 2023 ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
๐Ÿฆ…Like Concerts or ๐Ÿ„ Mushroom Festivals ๐Ÿ„
I Was Only 4 yrs old and a little busy in 1967
So..I didn't get to Go to the Monterey Festival.
But.. 2 yrs later,..I was able to get to Woodstock View attachment 44961
My Sis and I want to go to the Blue Oyster Cult concert in September at a small, refurbished theater in a nearby town, but the ticket prices are absolutely insane! This might be BOC's last go around so we'll probably cough up the bucks.

Man..You Gotta Do it.. or be SICK FOREVER wishing You had.. the Money is Replaceable.
BOC...Shit I might Go....
When I Was Young and Single, I'd hit the Hwy first, and Then Think Later..just get to the Show!
Turns out I was looking at an ad for some ticket broker's website, not that of the actual venue! What a bunch of rip off artists! Anyway, tickets have been purchased, and now we only have 6 months to wait!

I used to do the same thing. One time I heard on the radio that the Boomtown Rats, touring behind their first album, were playing a venue in Cleveland. I had no idea where the place was, but I knew it wasn't far from Cleveland State Univ. I vaguely knew where that was, so I set out. Wound up seeing a great show.

Ramps are starting to pop up hereโ€ฆ The morels are less than a month awayโ€ฆ Happy Hunting!!!
I'll have to go check a nearby ramp patch soon. I don't really expect to see much. Up here in NE Ohio our woods have no color in them yet. Saw on the TV weather last night that it was 41* up here and 68* down on the Ohio River about 150 miles south. There no better example of Ohio north of I-70 and Ohio south of I-70! I imagine Indiana might experience the same thing.

I find them every year in that soil temp in that spot like clockwork. Once it hits 38 degrees blacks will fruit in my findings. After ground temps hit 48 degrees I donโ€™t see new fruitings of blacks. After temps hit 45 degrees I start seeing the dog peckers and greys and at 50 I see the yellows popping until about 58-60 degrees. After that soil is too warm and they burn up and no new fruitings. If you look back at prior years I have temp pics in those as well. Yes itโ€™s sandy moist soil and to give general parallel I hunt between the interstate 80/90 and state route 2 corridor. Iโ€™m within 15 minutes of Lake Erie cedar point area in north central ohio. I also find mine around tulip poplars. Hereโ€™s a picture of the soil where I hunt them. To give an idea of the ground itโ€™s one of those places when you walk you kind of sink with every step. Sandy soil with moist heavy leaf litter and mature trees
View attachment 45121
Wow, that looks exactly like the soil in my main ramp spot. I'll have to take a walk down there pretty soon. Even if I don't find blacks, I can bring home some ramps since I know that they're up. They're nowhere near mature yet, but a little now and more later!

There's a survey that comes out every year, asking respondents to list what they value the most. The number one response this year? MONEY. It ranked higher than family, friends, religion, health, social participation...everything! Until that changes, this country is only going lower. We need to reject corporate culture and the finacialization of all we see.
I think that may be a reflection of a kind of "recency bias" because of inflation. Everything costs more now and everybody's budgets are stretched to the breaking point. Besides, what would be the alternative? A return to hunter/gatherer tribes, or a medieval existence with the barter system. There's a reason that money exists.

So sad seeing the storm devastation over here on the backside of Gosport. Prayers going out to everyone who got hit by the storms. Threw me out of shroomin mood and that's hard to do
Heading out to my fish & game club tomorrow for a look around. I have no idea what I might run into as far as downed trees go. Hope the roads and trails aren't blocked.

Anyone have a recipe for my chicken of the woods??
Bread them and fry them up just like morels. Also, there is a recipe thread on this site. It's near the top.

Just one note of caution that I forgot to mention earlier. The first time you try any wild gathered mushroom that's new to you, eat only a small amount then wait and check for reactions. This is especially true for polypore mushrooms like chickens and hens. Most folks can eat them with no problem, but they can cause some folks GI distress. Even our beloved morels can make some people sick.
