๐Ÿค  This Will Be My 57th Season of Hunting the Same Areas that My Dad first Carried Me into..when I was only 2 yrs old in 1965
I'm Not Studied up on all the New Sience that is Available in Our Age of Online..
I Just "Love the Hunt" and I Still Find Morels Almost every time I go, sometimes a few Sometimes a lot.. it is very Exciting to find a bunch like 50, 100 or 300..
But I believe we will all agree ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ’ฏ
It's the "Love of the Hunt" and just being in the woods is Always Our Heart โค
๐Ÿค  I hope this year as we all find Our way on down the trail together on Here..
That we will make time to take some Pictures of Cool, interesting things we see along the Way,
Maybe like a beautiful sunrise as you begin your hunt in the morning.. then pics of Morels Growing...
and when you find yourself looking face to face with a perfect Example for a ๐ŸŒณ Tree Identification ๐ŸŒณ please take some pictures and share them with All of us...
๐ŸŒฒ and just as well if you find a Tree you are Not Sure of ..share some good pics of it and we can All help to identify what it is.๐ŸŒฒ
๐Ÿ„ Also when Our Morels are done, STAY IN THE WOODS..We will Continue finding Many Other types of Edible Fungi ๐Ÿ„ all Summer and Fall into Winter ....
Ok โค Thank You Everyone ๐Ÿ˜Š
Let's get on down thru the Woods together and check in here often as You Can..
See ya soon

Think if it is not much earlier, since it's back to winter n everything looks to be going bout same weather wise. It's going to be the nightime temps that get us
I agree. The nighttime temps tend to dictate what kind of season we have close to the lake.

The monthly outlook is looking decent, though. I expect things to start on time, maybe a few days early if the predictions are somewhat accurate.

This is hopeful news, although I have to take it with a grain of salt. Cincinnati lies in that region known locally as "South of I-70". Here in the frozen wasteland of NE Ohio, that means that they are 6 to 8 weeks ahead of us. At least as far as blacks go. And blacks are still on my bucket list. I've never found a single one!

Something I read long ago said, something like, "The first thing you have to do when learning to hunt for black morels, is forget everything you know about yellows!" Reading more in order to pick up more info, I also read that you can find blacks near honey locust trees. Well, I know where a bunch of them are, but I've never checked that area for mushrooms. Any other suggestions about the environment that blacks prefer?
I do really well with blacks when the season comes early, but has cooler nighttime temps.

For example...
I live in NWI. 3 years ago was a normal season (started to really pop the last week of April), and I'd say I found maybe 100-120 blacks in my usual holes.
The next year was early (first find on April 11th or 12th), but the cooler nighttime temps lingered into May. Those exact same spots produced easily 300+, and for longer than normal. I was still finding new ones almost every day the yellows were up.
Last year was a late year, and I found less than 100 blacks. It didn't help that last year scorched the ground that harbors them. We had cooler temps, then that week of 80s/90s that killed everything over-exposed to the sun...nothing, not even weeds, grew in those patches the rest of the spring. In one spot that I found close to 100 2 years ago, last year I only found 5.

Trees that wake up and develop sooner tend to hold them. I always talk about how I love hunting ash trees, because that's where I find a good portion of my blacks during early seasons (greys too).

Also, I find them in areas with slightly more light exposure than greys and yellows. The ground is usually colder, so they need to absorb extra light to make up for it, hence the color.

Hope this helps :)

Its odd I live in south central Wisconsin 25 miles north of Illinois and we don't get black morels here. Always wondered why but do know Northern Illinois don't get them either. My goal is to find some one year soon if I can get a weekend off of work. I've heard they have a much stronger taste, but I don't know. And yes that heat messed up a lot made for a very short season 1 fruit and that was it. But was my best year 30 plus pounds had 4 trees that had 5 to 6 pounds around each and found morels in the oddest if places found a bunch in a straight line for about 200 feet they were spaced out about every 10 to 15 feet Lol. But best of luck, and hoping for a long much better year then last year!!
You definitely get them up there. When I started hunting again as an adult, I had one helluva time finding blacks until an early season rolled around.

One big difference between present times and the hundred year hunt is the amount of hunting ground available. I'n envious that you live so close to Hoosier National

You're really tryin' to get me with those Illinois pics, aren't you? Lol

The hunting lodge I'd be going in Illinois is farther north...around the same latitude as you, between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. That means I'd probably have to go just as the morels are starting around here (or right before). 1200 acres, probably 900+ with forests, and nice elevations. Looks like some public lands close to the rivers as well.

In Indiana, I'd be going back to where I've found them in the past, then maybe try a couple new spots...there's a lot of different places to hunt down there. Would probably stay near Seymour, North Vernon, or Scottsburg and branch out over a couple days

I had an invitation to go down to the Kentucky/Tennessee border, but I don't think I can make it. Still an outside shot, though.

100# Lol just hoping for better year than the last two
@Jtr gave you a thumbs up cuz he's after that 100# for real lol

I had a pretty good season 2 years ago. Blacks/greys/half-free were above average, yellows were stifled by cold nights. Still found 1100+

Chrrrisakkes I'm behind 16 pages already?!

What are everybody's GOALS for this coming mushroom season?
One goal I have every season is to find morels in at least one new forest.

My Sis and I want to go to the Blue Oyster Cult concert in September at a small, refurbished theater in a nearby town, but the ticket prices are absolutely insane! This might be BOC's last go around so we'll probably cough up the bucks.
And yet 5-10 years ago, you could've seen them at the county fair.

I got a disease, and the only cure is more...cowbell

That time of year when I get paid to hunt morels. A 100# would be possible but thatโ€™s a lot of overtime. I guess my goal for this year would be 60# or more with no overtime. ๐Ÿ˜‰
What I need is to have one of those 15-20lb days. Been a while since I hit that many at once. Had a few occasions like that and it's like hitting a hole-in-one...the smile stays with you for weeks

Turns out I was looking at an ad for some ticket broker's website, not that of the actual venue! What a bunch of rip off artists! Anyway, tickets have been purchased, and now we only have 6 months to wait!

I used to do the same thing. One time I heard on the radio that the Boomtown Rats, touring behind their first album, were playing a venue in Cleveland. I had no idea where the place was, but I knew it wasn't far from Cleveland State Univ. I vaguely knew where that was, so I set out. Wound up seeing a great show.
I miss $10 tickets at smaller venues, and $30 for huge names or all-day shows. Guess that shows my age, huh? All these damn whippersnappers nowadays with their Moby Grape and Iron Butterfly.

Gotta admit though, seeing David Gilmour on his last tour (twice) made me super happy, and was worth every penny.

I decided where to go on a trip. Had someone who hasn't been able to go out the past few years due to surgeries ask to tag along. I laid out options, and he wants to hit southern Indiana. Gonna camp and hit higher elevations one day, and scout new areas the next.

If all goes well, I still might go to Illinois, or at least back to Brown/Monroe/Morgan after...kinda depends on where our season is.

@Kokomorel, loved Salamonie as a kid...went fishing there often. Haven't been back to hunt morels, but I sure think about it every year.

Bullitt County Kentucky, that's about 10-miles South of Louisville ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„
They keep creepin' on up. We figured we'd head downstate the third week of April, but I'm already gettin' antsy in da pantsy.

Not much happening up here in NWI. A bit of green and new chutes, but few berries/seeds. We have a couple sub-freezing nights ahead of us over the next week. Once they pass, it's smooth sailing if the monthly forecasts are somewhat close. Still think we'll start a little early. (y)

Made up a couple batches of lemon balm...bring on the poison ivy!

Getting ready to make a batch of your balm. Hope this avocado oil will work as a carrier. Going to use the boiling water method because i procrastinated too long this winter. Will need it soon. If anyone is interested it's on page 64 of last years post. Thanks again! View attachment 45111
Let me know how the Avocado oil works out...I'm interested in the outcome.

The darker balm in my pic is olive oil, the lighter being sunflower oil. I've started to use castor oil in every mix because it makes the balm very easy to apply. If you use castor oil (maybe 15-20 drops/cup), add about 1/2-1g of wax to compensate.

I forgot the calendula this time around, but am making another batch with some added. That batch will also have tea tree oil and peppermint.

Hard to believe that those blacks will come up in 40*! You must be on the same parallel as me. I'm on the Mi.- In. state line and my lake temp. is the same. I usually wouldn't even think to look this early but I have a spot that produces blacks around tulip poplar. Is that a dark black sandy loam where your finding? Next weeks weather is finally looking better!!!
I'm close to the state line as well. In these types of years, my father would be out already, and many times would find some. He would hunt where the soil has more sand in mix,, closer to the lake. I've found blacks in the low 40s before, but I've never had the early success that he had. A lot of his spots are restricted now, and others I don't remember.
