Hamilton County Ohio March 16th 2023 "Cincinnati" View attachment 44882 Hamilton County Ohio March 16th 2023 "Cincinnati"
This is hopeful news, although I have to take it with a grain of salt. Cincinnati lies in that region known locally as "South of I-70". Here in the frozen wasteland of NE Ohio, that means that they are 6 to 8 weeks ahead of us. At least as far as blacks go. And blacks are still on my bucket list. I've never found a single one!

Something I read long ago said, something like, "The first thing you have to do when learning to hunt for black morels, is forget everything you know about yellows!" Reading more in order to pick up more info, I also read that you can find blacks near honey locust trees. Well, I know where a bunch of them are, but I've never checked that area for mushrooms. Any other suggestions about the environment that blacks prefer?

I’ve personally never found one half free or dog pecker whatever you want to call them where I find black morels. I do find yellows though in same area just later in season. Tulip poplar trees are the ticket in area where I find them at. @shroomsearcher if you wait 6-8 weeks to find blacks they’re gonna be gone. I’ll be finding blacks by first week of April at latest as usual year in year out and I think it’ll be earlier this year due to ground temps and conditions looking good. I hunt less than 15 minute drive from Lake Erie in northern ohio as well. If you want to find some blacks this year pm me and you can come to the spot I hunt and I’ll show you what/where to look for. But main reason I find blacks and as many morels every year as I do is because I’m looking when other people say they’re not up yet. Early bird gets the worm kind of thing. It’s all 100% public state wildlife areas too. Offers open if you want to tag along sometime..

I do really well with blacks when the season comes early, but has cooler nighttime temps.

For example...
I live in NWI. 3 years ago was a normal season (started to really pop the last week of April), and I'd say I found maybe 100-120 blacks in my usual holes.
The next year was early (first find on April 11th or 12th), but the cooler nighttime temps lingered into May. Those exact same spots produced easily 300+, and for longer than normal. I was still finding new ones almost every day the yellows were up.
Last year was a late year, and I found less than 100 blacks. It didn't help that last year scorched the ground that harbors them. We had cooler temps, then that week of 80s/90s that killed everything over-exposed to the sun...nothing, not even weeds, grew in those patches the rest of the spring. In one spot that I found close to 100 2 years ago, last year I only found 5.

Trees that wake up and develop sooner tend to hold them. I always talk about how I love hunting ash trees, because that's where I find a good portion of my blacks during early seasons (greys too).

Also, I find them in areas with slightly more light exposure than greys and yellows. The ground is usually colder, so they need to absorb extra light to make up for it, hence the color.

Hope this helps :)

Its odd I live in south central Wisconsin 25 miles north of Illinois and we don't get black morels here. Always wondered why but do know Northern Illinois don't get them either. My goal is to find some one year soon if I can get a weekend off of work. I've heard they have a much stronger taste, but I don't know. And yes that heat messed up a lot made for a very short season 1 fruit and that was it. But was my best year 30 plus pounds had 4 trees that had 5 to 6 pounds around each and found morels in the oddest if places found a bunch in a straight line for about 200 feet they were spaced out about every 10 to 15 feet Lol. But best of luck, and hoping for a long much better year then last year!!

Hey Wade,

Remember last year when you were writing about a Monumental once in a lifetime Morel Shroom Year and asking if anyone remembered such an event from decades ago?

Well, something like that appears to be going on in California right now.

To quote the article: "Experts are calling it a once-in-a-generation shroom boom ." and the article title: Shroom Boom, the Hunt is On as California Rains Fuel a Mushroom Explosion"

Great Spring to everyone!!! :) 😎
