๐Ÿค  This Will Be My 57th Season of Hunting the Same Areas that My Dad first Carried Me into..when I was only 2 yrs old in 1965
I'm Not Studied up on all the New Sience that is Available in Our Age of Online..
I Just "Love the Hunt" and I Still Find Morels Almost every time I go, sometimes a few Sometimes a lot.. it is very Exciting to find a bunch like 50, 100 or 300..
But I believe we will all agree ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ’ฏ
It's the "Love of the Hunt" and just being in the woods is Always Our Heart โค
๐Ÿค  I hope this year as we all find Our way on down the trail together on Here..
That we will make time to take some Pictures of Cool, interesting things we see along the Way,
Maybe like a beautiful sunrise as you begin your hunt in the morning.. then pics of Morels Growing...
and when you find yourself looking face to face with a perfect Example for a ๐ŸŒณ Tree Identification ๐ŸŒณ please take some pictures and share them with All of us...
๐ŸŒฒ and just as well if you find a Tree you are Not Sure of ..share some good pics of it and we can All help to identify what it is.๐ŸŒฒ
๐Ÿ„ Also when Our Morels are done, STAY IN THE WOODS..We will Continue finding Many Other types of Edible Fungi ๐Ÿ„ all Summer and Fall into Winter ....
Ok โค Thank You Everyone ๐Ÿ˜Š
Let's get on down thru the Woods together and check in here often as You Can..
See ya soon
from Wade ๐Ÿค

Think I'll slip back out to where I left that little black and see if it grew any and if any more popped up . If it's still there....

Not much has changed out there so not much to report. Did see a couple new wild plants popping up. Was surprised there was no growth or color change in it. Nice walk no less. Will check again after the next rain and the sun pops out.

Went back this afternoon quick to check on progress of oneโ€™s I left. Some hadnโ€™t grown at all. Some really shot up. Not much new growth over 48 hours. I picked 6 more today. Will go back this coming weekend to see what else is popping. Greenery in woods looked about the same. Ground temps up a fuzz.

Not much happening up here in NWI. A bit of green and new chutes, but few berries/seeds. We have a couple sub-freezing nights ahead of us over the next week. Once they pass, it's smooth sailing if the monthly forecasts are somewhat close. Still think we'll start a little early. (y)

Made up a couple batches of lemon balm...bring on the poison ivy!

Getting ready to make a batch of your balm. Hope this avocado oil will work as a carrier. Going to use the boiling water method because i procrastinated too long this winter. Will need it soon. If anyone is interested it's on page 64 of last years post. Thanks again!

(Northern ohio) Went out today expecting to find nothing and thatโ€™s exactly what I did๐Ÿ˜. My first ever March Morel! Usually find them first week of April in this spot. First found 7 blacks last year 4-10-22. Picked 8 today 3-26-23. So about two weeks ahead of schedule. Ground temps 39-41. Seen over 20 will go back in few days to round up some more. Picked these 8 for a meal. Mayapples barely up 1โ€ or less. Ramps 3-4โ€ at most. Woods hardly greened up at all. It begins! View attachment 45066
Hard to believe that those blacks will come up in 40*! You must be on the same parallel as me. I'm on the Mi.- In. state line and my lake temp. is the same. I usually wouldn't even think to look this early but I have a spot that produces blacks around tulip poplar. Is that a dark black sandy loam where your finding? Next weeks weather is finally looking better!!!

Let me know how the Avocado oil works out...I'm interested in the outcome.

The darker balm in my pic is olive oil, the lighter being sunflower oil. I've started to use castor oil in every mix because it makes the balm very easy to apply. If you use castor oil (maybe 15-20 drops/cup), add about 1/2-1g of wax to compensate.

I forgot the calendula this time around, but am making another batch with some added. That batch will also have tea tree oil and peppermint.

I'm close to the state line as well. In these types of years, my father would be out already, and many times would find some. He would hunt where the soil has more sand in mix,, closer to the lake. I've found blacks in the low 40s before, but I've never had the early success that he had. A lot of his spots are restricted now, and others I don't remember.

I find them every year in that soil temp in that spot like clockwork. Once it hits 38 degrees blacks will fruit in my findings. After ground temps hit 48 degrees I donโ€™t see new fruitings of blacks. After temps hit 45 degrees I start seeing the dog peckers and greys and at 50 I see the yellows popping until about 58-60 degrees. After that soil is too warm and they burn up and no new fruitings. If you look back at prior years I have temp pics in those as well. Yes itโ€™s sandy moist soil and to give general parallel I hunt between the interstate 80/90 and state route 2 corridor. Iโ€™m within 15 minutes of Lake Erie cedar point area in north central ohio. I also find mine around tulip poplars. Hereโ€™s a picture of the soil where I hunt them. To give an idea of the ground itโ€™s one of those places when you walk you kind of sink with every step. Sandy soil with moist heavy leaf litter and mature trees

Uh oh...

3 barges broke free on the Ohio River in Louisville and are partially submerged, while carrying methanol. Could be trouble for the area if the toxins get out.

Headed out there in the morning. Should i be looking for certain sites for Blacks? I think Iโ€™ve only ever found a single one outside of Shoals. Always appreciative and will report findings over the next 2 days.

There's a survey that comes out every year, asking respondents to list what they value the most. The number one response this year? MONEY. It ranked higher than family, friends, religion, health, social participation...everything! Until that changes, this country is only going lower. We need to reject corporate culture and the finacialization of all we see.

Here's a link to the barge situation...it's a Zerohedge article.

Ohio River Disaster

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that methanol is highly toxic to both humans and wildlife. This chemical, classified under the category of "toxic alcohols," is commonly found in antifreeze, carburetor cleaner, and windshield washer fluids.
... and this incident comes on the heels of the toxic water release from the train derailment in East Palestine, which flowed down the Ohio River, prompting water agencies to take preventive measures to safeguard drinking water for millions of people."
