Well, its 2023 and its warm here in Texas. Getting plenty of rain on the Eastern side of the state. If this weather pattern keeps up, we should be finding morels in February. Its happened to me once before. Hope all in Texas has a good season.

Found the first one today on my early spot. More rain in the forecast for today so it should be ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Technically this is the first find of 2023....all others found are fake news!!!!
Yes…in a good year picking in central Texas can be great. In a bad year, experienced pickers get little or none. No idea what this year holds, but it’s time to get out there. Check out the ‘22 TX thread or maybe even earlier. You’ll be looking for cedars/junipers in limestone soil, which is different from many areas.
Look at the photo evidence our friend here gave us, in Texas it seems to be conifers. I have found lots of conifer related morels. They seem to be less consistent than the hardwoods.
Yes. In the part of N central TX where I hunt, you are looking for limestone soil and junipers/cedars, tho some live oak and elm in there too. Years are very hit or miss...at least for me. I think I'll find out a lot about this year tomorrow afternoon.
TX along the red river seems to have more typical tree relationships... elm/ash/sycamore/cottonwood. Plenty of E TX knowledge on here too. Used to pick burn and clear cut morels in OR, which surely seemed conifer related. Very reliable though not year after year. Good luck!
Some steady picking over the last week but still mostly youngsters and haven’t found a mature yellow yet. N central TX. The cold shocked a bunch I’d been leaving to grow. Hopeful the peak is still to come
