The past 2 years have begun with perfect mid-April conditions that have rapidly deteriorated with subfreezing overnight temps, drought, and excessive wind.
Now 3 years post-derecho, the stressed and dying tracts of hardwood throughout east-central Iowa will burst forth a bounty so vast that people will be giving bags of mushrooms away in a manner similar to what they did during the 1960s Dutch elm disease.
