We always do to confirm they are a true morel and to make sure we get all bugs removed

Some people believe cooking false morels destroys the monomethylhydrazine but it doesn't, and I've herd it can actually be reconstituted in the gut although I haven't verified that.

I'd say anything with a cotton like mold growth should go into the compost.

I am always confused by articles that claim that gyromitra resemble morels. It makes me wonder how those people's eyes work. My first year hunting for morels, the first shrooms I found were gyromitra. I knew doggone well what they were, and knew they were NOT morels!

I used to say the same thing until a few months ago. I found some tight ones that just happened to look like morels although they were a little pinkish. A newbie could definitely be confused. It's a small percentage though.

Which reminds me that,in my life, I have found exactly one real half free morel. And it crumbled to pieces the instant my fingertips touched it! What I find a lot of where I hunt is Verpa conica. They were out in force this season. After you see enough of them, you can tell just by looking. However, I'll usually cut one just to confirm the ID. I think verpa bohemica could be more easily mistaken for a half free, but I've never found one of them around here either.
