I'm heading to Charleston area (Marmet) to visit grandson and want to take him out to find some mushrooms. He's never been out and I'm not from the area so don't know where to go. If someone could give me info on where I can take him to find his first mushroom that would be great.

Hello Chiselhead, I'm not from that area so I can't give you any pointers as to a sure find. I do know that the Kanawha Valley usually hits a week or so before we do here in the Beckley area. I had a friend that lived in Cabin Creek and he would always find them a week, sometimes 2 weeks before we would. Up here it's getting down to slim pickings with just the blondes and a few grays remaining, or at least in the places I find them. You might take a ride out to Kanawha State forest and check around there. I had a friend that used to find a few up there but I don't know that park at all. Try to find some poplar stands and check there. Good Luck!!
