Bumping old thread rather than starting a new one..
I’m researching and google earth scouting places in East Texas north of Houston as well. Shepherd isn’t too far from me and wondering if anyone has experience or input on this area. Found some preserves nearby; one of which is a little west of shepherd, Big Creek scenic area. And to the East at Segno the Big Thicket national preserve. Both seem piney and have potential maybe. Also what about Sam Houston national forest.
Anyone familiar? Especially you mushroom geologist :)

Big Thicket is a national preserve...no picking allowed....or at least don't get caught. Davy Crocket National Forest, around Alto and Crocket, picking is allowed, with a permit. Be careful around woods of Shepard...meth capital of Texas, in my opinion. Its probably risky picking there and not much for public land at all.

SAm Houston National Forest, same as Davy Crockett National Forest, must have a permit. Not sure how you get one though.

  1. You are allowed to harvest 1 gallon of mushrooms per person per day, for private use only, in the four National Forests of Texas - Sam Houston NF, Davy Crockett NF, Angelina NF, and Sabine NF. You can not pick other plants without first getting a park ranger's permission., found this just now on guides to picking in National Forests. Texas does not allow for harvesting in state parks.
