Must be warming up quick little colder here in Eastern KY don’t usually see may apples popping til around mid march here depending on weather

Soil temps as of this afternoon! And we have a very warm 65-70 degree rain on its way tonight. I’m going to guess that someone in KY will be reporting a find of a black morel in a couple of days. The earliest that I have ever found one in KY was 3/3/2017.

I'm so excited! I'll be looking in southern Jefferson county next weekend. Last week, I've only seen a few wood ear and dried up old pheasant's backs. I found some lovely oyster and lion's mane in metro louisville earlier this Winter. I'm happy to share cultures and fruiting blocks with fellow forum members - just message me.

I picked quite a few fresh oysters in December and early January also. Were your Lions Manes in good shape? I haven’t found any for @ a year or so.

It was the best specimen of Lion's Mane I've found in years, located in a residential area. It roasted nicely with turnip greens. I have some grain spawn made up of it, and hope to fruit it indoors this Spring.

Hey Rick, so your records go back to 2012? That was a record warm year for northern Indiana, and this winter has been very similar, I was finding fully grow morels in late March, which is unheard for northern Indiana.

My harvests records do go back to 2012. They consist of earliest find dates, type of morel , #’s and county where they were found. I haven’t kept a written record of temperature/rain data.

I’ve heard of 3 reports of people finding blacks in south central KY near Mammoth Cave National Park and south of there. A fellow picker sent this pic of black morels he found yesterday.

Not heard of any finds so far in southeastern Kentucky but I’ll keep you all posted. These temp swings from week to week gives me pause on any finds this early

Unfortunately I haven’t been out to check on my spots yet this season. I will probably get my 1st hunt in on 3/9 this year. There have been numerous confirmed finds of blacks in south central Ky near the Mammoth Cave area and south of there. Season started over a week earlier than last year and the weather the past few days will have them popping big time the next few days.
