    A soil temperature of 53º F. is when morels begin to make themselves known. By going to this link, you can get a rough idea of the soil temperature in your county. To be precise, however, take an instant-read thermometer with you, push it into the soil, and wait a moment until the temperature drops as low as it will go. The aspect of the slope, the amount of sunlight hitting it, the soil type (sand, silt, loam, clay) all make a difference. Here's the link: Iowa Soil Temperatures
