At top middle of photo are 3 large black morels and one small one found fresh along with all the others found today. Average ground temp 66F I started finding blacks on March 19th. All of these are going in the dehydrator. View attachment 48890

Soil temp. is not accurate. It can range 5-10 degrees each day depending on time of day, how much or little sun it gets, how much moisture there is, and how deep one puts their thermometer. It would also depend on how deep the morels mycelium in in the soil where yours grow. I tried taking very many readings for many years. If your temperature of 66 is accurate your season should be over. It was most likely thought that mores would start fruiting at 53 degrees for the yellows. Black morels wee 3-8 degrees cooler but this is mostly guess work. I also took or had delivered to me many soil samples from GA to New Jersey and one from Idaho that I had tested at my local extension service. I couldn't find any nutrient or pH that morels finds had in common.
The best indicator I could find in the Appalachian chain from SC to VA was when the May Apple leaves flattened out.
Always try to to look at all conditions when you find morels. after many years you'll get a good chance on knowing when they'll fruit in your area.
I wrote a several page paper on how and when to look for mores in the east which was published by several clubs but it's been quite a few years since. I've also given talks about finding morels from Atlanta to Washington DC clubs. I wrote this part to let people know I feel confident in my opinions although morels will always appear under surprising conditions and areas . Once I heard first hand reports of fire burn morels in VA.

In my experience, it does very dramatically..all of my spots are early every year..I usually start finding mine when the may apples have started sprouting..they are about 2-4inches tall and the leaves are still Spiraled around the stalk..I believe my spots are early because they all have a lot of ground moss making the soil temp warmer..just my two sense..

Morel Fettuccine. Absolutely delicious! La Tavola Italian Restaurant, Columbus, OH.

Food Recipe Pasta Ingredient Staple food

My stepson let me know that La Tavola Italian Restaurant was serving Morel Pizza as a menu special by texting me this pic below of his pizza, Tuesday evening.

I/we promptly made reservations and had dinner there, Thursday. I ordered the Fettucini instead of the pizza because the server erroneously told me that the pizza had other mushrooms in addition to the Morels. After dinner I was informed that BOTH Morel Specials used 100% Morels.

So, I'm going back, either tonight or tomorrow to try the Morel Pizza.

Happy hunting to everyone!!

Awesome haul! I have found 45 this year which is better than the 4 I found last year. I haven’t had much luck in the wildlife areas around Columbus. The woods there are so thick with thorns and honey suckle you can barely get anywhere let alone see the ground. Though I have only explored a fraction of these areas, maybe there are more open woods around there somewhere.

I don’t particularly hunt Columbus but if you travel due east on 70 to zanesville southeast to the AEP grounds or whatever they are called now you will find shrooms…also try tar hollow state forest. Go to church hollow follow the creek. Lots of elms😏it’s just too far for me to drive anymore for mushrooms.

O damn those dishes look very tasty for sure. Don't hear of many restaurants having morels on the menu to often

I was planning on throwing in the towel on this season after this past weekend because the season came early and it’s been hot and dry recently. But that means no more hunting until next year which is a huge bummer. Looks like some rain is in the forecast over the next few days so I going to give it one last shot this weekend. I have a few areas I have not had time to check yet this season closer to home and figure it’s worth a shot! Would love to have a closer spot to home!

I've been kind of thinking the same thing, but I've found morels in other years long past this date. This is in NE OH. The weather has been squirrely to say the least. No problem with moisture, this has been the 7th wettest April on record. But the temps went into the crapper with lows below freezing and frost warnings, and then sudden warmups. It was in the low 80's the past two days and tomorrow is supposed to be in the low 70's with more rain.

I behaved responsibly today getting all the yard work done because it needed it, and if I ignored it, it would just make harder work for me. I'll keep an eye out tomorrow and see if I can get out and have a look. If not tomorrow then Wednesday. Supposed to be back in the low 80's then.

I would say prime Morel hunting is just starting in extreme NE Ohio. We’ve had plenty of rain and more is expected but temps have been very cool except for the last several days. I’ve hunted quite a bit the past couple of weeks in my prime spots but only found a few blacks.
Hit them again yesterday and within 5 minutes found 6. Ended the day with 68 exceptional quality Morels. Wet warm weather is in the forecast so I would expect the next two weeks to be prime! If the pics below are any indication, it’s going to be a fantastic year!

Nice, JW! I was able to get out yesterday and today. Checked 2 of my spots yesterday, and it was a Verpa kind of day. Found big, flopped over ones everywhere, and exactly one nice, big morel! Right by my trusty Sycamore tree.

Today I checked a spot that I thought about giving up on. An apple tree that got blown over in a Winter storm and died last year. The tree used to be leaning at a 45 degree angle, but is completely down now, and the immediate area has grown into the most God-awful thicket you can imagine! I found a dozen nice, big morels in prime condition there. It took a lot of work, but I'm a happy camper!

Awesome find, would love to have some 😁

I was responsible yesterday, getting all the yard work done. I cut the neighbor lady's grass too, she's on disability. With several days of rain coming in, I'm trying to stay ahead of it, otherwise it just makes more work for me!

Last time out my "upper" spot gave me the bag. But I was beat, and beaten up, after crawling around in that thicket that I just walked out with what I had. There's another area up there that I want to have a look at. I'm more curious about my "lower" spot. It's usually my most dependable but didn't show me much last time. We'll see.
