FM, always great pics! I would love to see a pic of what hens look like when they first pop through if you come across any more babies. The cap of that Lacey one has the contours of a morel.

Don't know if you've been out recently, fm, but the sheer number of baby Maitake I'm seeing makes me a little giddy. This fall is looking pretty amazing in general... today I found: my first ever matsutake stand, 1 random unbuggy :) giant of a chanterelle, a 1/2 lb hedgehog, a dozen small porcini, 2 new maitake babies, and a pair of shaggy manes. And those are just the ones that I was excited about (another wave of oysters? Oceans of honeys? Yawn.) also found a slime mold that resembled a small rabbit & seemed to be going places & a mazegill (?) apartment complex. I am in love with this land.

IMG_2220.JPG I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that the mushrooms below are matsutake. I feel pretty certain bc I've never smelled anything else even remotely similar to this "cross between red hots & dirty socks." But since their my first & I'd like to eat them, I'd love another opinion.

Yea this season is going amazing so far. Over 100 lbs of hens but have been traveling like mad. Took a few days off for wormtown but back at it now. Both freezers are packed and all my buyers are well stocked. Also have given away tons. Those look like matsutake to me, you can get a boatload of cash for them, especially the #1's. A few years ago I hopped a train to NYC with a cooler full and hit the Asian markets. Made for some great Christmas cash. Very nice finds by the way. Ramble on baby!

I've been selling mushrooms for the past year to restaurants in berkshires & providence area. Do you sell wholesale or to private buyers? Would love to cross check prices with you, fm, if that's not crossing any boundaries. . . Right now, I comb online stores & eBay to get a rough estimate of $ per #. Sold trumpets in berry baskets this summer- told chefs I didn't give a shit what they weighed;) As for selling matsutake, I'm guessing I'd have to have a cooler full before it'd be worth it. Just for giggles, I'd love to know what you got #1s...

I do hens for 12.50 a lb. whole or 17.50 separated and cleaned. Chickens for 10. Never sold any trumpets as those are my favorites and have a hard time parting with them. A few years back I got around 200 a lb for #1's but prices have fallen drastically. Last year I was getting 80 locally. Mostly I sell to local chefs but have made sales at a few organic food markets.

Most people are either all for it or want nothing to do with them. Had a few chefs tell me it's against the law to sell wild foods in ct. 20170917_141039.jpg 20170913_101257.jpg 20170921_105018.jpg 20170917_124156.jpg 20170921_093720.jpg 20170921_102535.jpg 20170913_111617.jpg 20170919_161341.jpg

I got some old pics perhaps in my phone was a good dead log rotting had a bunch of orange guys in it and not chickens these actually aren’t what I hoped to find but these were cool. The orange ones I hoped for were like bright orange half dollar sized caps. Also see these like you got but I swear we’re yellow or orange even in fat clumps of several dozen I’d say. would say last July august. I should have them in a second. I’d guess these are amanita for the white specs on em???
