In late September and all through October of 2014, Arizona experienced one of its most memorable fungal fruitings ever-- a massive flush of burn morels that followed summer forest fires and heavy, warm rains in the early fall. I picked over 60 lbs. altogether. In places, they carpeted the forest floor so thickly you could not walk without stepping on them.

DO morels always pop up there this time of year?

No, very seldom. Nothing like this has been seen since 1997.

We have spring morels, and occasionally see them in the summer, but the conditions have to be perfect for the fall flushes.
