Friends in Sundance had good luck w/black morels near Cook Lake in the Bear Lodge last two weekends. Flooded out road closures have limited some access points of late.
On Tuesday we went through the Oil Creek fire of last year North of Newcastle and found two dozen black morels. For a 60,000+ acre fire we were disappointed with the finds, perhaps the red clay soil is not right for morels?
You probably could have found that many before the fire. I know when they had those big fires around Yellowstone people were hauling the morels out of there. It must be more condusive for morels development there.
