Same problem as before, no pics. I'd be interested in the Chant/Crawdad tail pie. Occasionally the next door neighbor lady gets adventurous, and a few years ago she prepared a Louisiana style dish that had crawdad tails in it. Her kids wanted nothing to do with it, so she brought me over a bunch of leftovers. It was delicious!

I had a phenomenal Chant year last year. Best one ever. Good luck to all this year.

WHOOAH!

This Picture is from this morning Feb 27. Two Shiitake on my old logs, in my back yard, that gave me nothing last year.

In the past finding Shiitake on my logs would be a harbinger telling me to get out into the woods for 'shrooms.

After breakfast, I'm going out to my spot for Black Morels that has given me delight for 11 years in a row and see if there is a surprise waiting.

Any Bets?

The rest of the story.

I'm back from the short trip to my reliable Black Morel spot - with no Black Morels!

As I thought about getting carried away with excitement, I recalled that the home grown shiitake never predicted the FIRST mushrooms of the year or the first Morels. They showed that there was adequate moisture for mushrooms to grow.

Next, I took soil temperatures in my back yard at 2" soil depth and found 48 degrees in the sunny part of the yard and 44 degrees in continuous shade. In my Black Morel spot, the soil temp was also 48 degrees at 2" of soil depth in the sun.

These are still too low for Morels in my experience, which is in the 50's.

I'll call it a win because I enjoyed getting excited and getting into the woods!! 😎 ⛅

Today I put the trampoline up for my daughter and worked around yard. I raked back the leaf litter over my garlic plants (23 out of 30 bulbs sprouted from last falls plantings). In my raised asparagus bed and there’s one feller up already about 2-3” tall. 12 years since building and planting it took time but now we get bountiful harvest in backyard in 4x8 bed.

Damn you got some baseball size hail! We had some here where I'm at but was about size of a marble. That would really suck to be out in the woods n it started hailing. Even heard that there was a tornado 🌪 touched down around Winchester Indiana which is east side of state, but I cannot confirm this..
