Black Morels Today - Central OH- Franklin County

Today now makes 12 years in a row for Black Morels in the same of spot: South facing bank of a e-w tributary creek to the Scioto River. I usually get 40 to 65 Morels. Today was early. I picked 11 and left 10-12 that were showing but small. It will be good for a couple more picks or one good one.

Maybe I'll fry some fish and have these as a side. It is officially beginning here.

My statistical, morel 1st find date is about April 15.

What kind of trees do you find your blacks associating with or is more of good soil conditions?

Hmmm. I can think of a place that resembles that not far from me. It's been cold, rainy, and gloomy up here, but it looks like we could shake that pattern by the end of the weekend. It's supposed to go down to 25F tonight, with maybe a little snow! Commercial orchard owners have to be crapping their pants. After a couple nice days I'll go take a look while giving the yard a chance to dry out. I still haven't heard a mower in my area, but that's not because the grass doesn't need cut! It does, it's just soaking wet. A few decorative, flowering trees are starting to bloom, but no dandelions yet. If I find anything it will be the earliest I've ever founds morels by a mile!

While breaded Fried Morels don't show up visually the best, they do satisfy the taste part of the equation.

Treat yourself, spend some time in the woods. 😊 🌞

Soothsayer: Excellent question. However, after getting Morels for 12 years now in this same spot, I don't pay any attention to the trees and as I'm trying to recall, I don't recall any particular one tree. Each year it's the same 65 ft section of creek bank that pops the Black Morels. I keep looking elsewhere along the creek, but nada. Interestingly, there's a lot of length to this creek and I've found the Blondes and Tulips also, ramps also, but no Blacks elsewhere long the creek.

This creek runs behind my house also, some distance away. So, perhaps instead of eating them i should make a slurry of my finds this year, spread them along the creek behind my house and see if I can encourage Black Morels to establish themselves behind my house, ha!

Best luck to all!

So what you’re saying is they are very picky 😆

Thanks for the insight!

Went this morning. Vehicle said 24 when I got there. Shrooms were “freeze dried” for me by Mother Nature. Frozen solid upon picking them. Ended up with 19 today. 102 for season. It’s supposed to be warmer here next several days should get better yet. 🤞🤞🤞🍄🍄‍🟫🙏🙏🙏 View attachment 50245 View attachment 50246 View attachment 50247 View attachment 50248 View attachment 50249 View attachment 50250 View attachment 50251 View attachment 50252
Hate to see that. Forget what year it was, maybe mid 2000's, but it's the only year I can remember picking frozen shrooms....It was after an extremely warm march, then a blast of low 20's for several nights. Ended up being a down year. Felt like those still under the leaves would be ok, but when it hits 20 deg. I'm not so sure ground temps and leaf litter come into play.

Woke up to another blanket of white this morning. Got up to 46 today so about 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. It looks like we are finally going to work our way out of this cold funk we've been in. As far as I've been able to determine, the soil temps around here have not gotten warm enough to get the morels, or much of anything else, going in the woods. And Gutterman's pic of morels with what appear to be ramps and a couple of small may apples gives me more hope. No may apples in sight yet, and ramps are not that far along.

I am happy to say that against the odds I have lived to see another mushroom hunting season!!! Even terminal cancer won't keep me from the search lmao! I'm north central. Should I be out…???! It's bout week earlier than last year . I'm so excited!!!! Putting boots and another layer on and taking me a walk! I'm gonna hit it big this year! I have faith!

Hit Shawnee couple days ago and came up empty handed. As good as it looks in the Bottoms, when you get up into the hills it still looks like it's not far enough along yet. I mostly hunt south central OH and any more, don't even bother til mid April. Peak is almost always last week of April.
If your new to hunting, that is your best opportunity.
